PARENTING ADVICE YOU SHOULD KNOW

PARENTING ADVICE YOU SHOULD KNOW

Raising and understanding a child is never easy for parents. However, equipping yourself with knowledge and experience will provide you with a solid foundation, helping your child build self-confidence and understand their self-worth as they grow up.

Respect Your Child's Tears
If you tell a child to stop crying, they will likely cry even more and think they must force themselves to be okay, which can foster long-term insecurity and anxiety.
When your child cries, it's important to let them know that the pain they are experiencing is valid. Crying is an expression of emotion, and if parents dismiss their child's feelings, it can damage the child's self-confidence. Shedding tears is not a bad thing or something to be ashamed of; it is something to be valued and honored.

Show Your Child Empathy
A child may not become a good person if they do not learn to empathize with others. They perceive themselves through your eyes and behave based on how you treat them.
Children cannot make wise decisions on their own, which is why parents need to step in to guide them. You can show your child what empathy means by demonstrating it to them in difficult situations. It's crucial to be consistent with this so your child understands, as it cannot happen overnight.

Change Your Responses to Help Your Child Become More Confident
The best way to teach a child confidence is to show them the importance of their own feelings over the opinions of others. A positive self-image comes from within, not from the "outside."
It's not bad to say "You look great" in response to your child's new outfit, as it might ease their anxiety momentarily, but it may not help in the long run. Sometimes, changing your response can lead your child to think, 'I feel better wearing that other outfit.' This helps the child develop their own sense of self rather than relying on external validation.

Show Concern and Understanding When Your Child Lies
Lying might seem like a disrespectful act, but it's important to manage your own emotions and focus on your child's feelings. Children might lie to protect their relationship with you. They might also lie out of fear of the consequences or being scolded. However, if you respond with care and understanding, your child will be more likely to tell the truth each time.

Respond with Curiosity When Your Child Says Something Meaningful
It's normal for your child to say meaningful things about family members or occasionally tease friends – and it's important that you react appropriately, so your child can develop better judgment and behavior.

A Whisper Can Sometimes Be Better Than a Shout
Being present and fostering connection is essential for your child's well-being. This doesn't mean you have to constantly please them, such as walking to the park in freezing weather or solving puzzles all day. A simple, sweet whisper can show your child that they are special to you.
Connecting with your child can lead to better behavior and cooperation in the moment, while also improving their future emotional regulation and self-confidence.

Children Need Their Parents to Understand Them
When your child feels lonely and confused about their surroundings, it can lead to behavioral issues and adjustment disorders. That's why it's important to acknowledge when things around them are changing.
You don't need to explain everything in detail, but simply vocalize to "validate their perception, then share details appropriate for their age." This can help your child feel emotionally secure even in uncomfortable circumstances.

Use Different Words to Praise Your Child
In some cases, the "process" is more important than the completed "result." When you show interest in your child's mental process, they become the main focus of the conversation. This can make your child feel worthy and boost their self-confidence.
Simply saying "Great job!" might make your child feel that your primary interest is their work, not them. This can diminish their confidence and create insecurity.
